Is my company a JEI? What tax benefits are available to my investors?
JEI, or Jeune Entreprise Innovante (Young Innovative Company), is a status that provides tax advantages. Here are a few key points to help you understand it more clearly.
Since 2024, individuals wishing to invest in unlisted companies (equity investments) can benefit from significant tax incentives, particularly in the form of income tax reductions.
Indeed, under the 2024 Finance Act, two new statuses have been introduced: JEIC (Jeune Entreprise Innovante de Croissance – Young Innovative Growth Company) and JEIR (Jeune Entreprise d’Innovation de Rupture – Young Breakthrough Innovation Company).
This reform aims to further encourage individuals to invest in innovation—an opportunity for both investors and the French startup ecosystem.
What is JEI status?
The Jeune Entreprise Innovante (JEI) status was created to support the development of French SMEs involved in research and innovation. It promotes the growth of young, dynamic companies by offering a favorable tax framework.
To be eligible, a company must meet the following conditions:
-
Be a French SME less than 8 years old;
-
Employ fewer than 250 people;
-
Generate annual revenue of less than €50 million;
-
Be more than 50% owned by individuals (or other JEIs);
-
Allocate a certain percentage of its total expenses to research and development (R&D) activities.
JEIC and JEIR – what are the differences?
As part of the 2024 reform, the JEI scheme has been expanded with the creation of two new statuses: JEIC and JEIR. These variations broaden the scope of eligible companies while offering different tax reductions depending on the level of R&D investment and the company’s growth profile.
1. JEIC – Young Innovative Growth Company
JEIC status is aimed at companies that invest between 5% and 15% of their total expenses in research and development. This lower threshold allows more high-potential companies to access the scheme.
To be eligible, the company must also demonstrate growth potential based on two criteria:
-
R&D expenditure must be stable or increasing compared to the previous year;
-
The workforce must have doubled and increased by at least 10 employees since the year before last.
Individuals investing in a JEIC benefit from an income tax reduction equal to 30% of the amount invested in the company’s share capital.
Note: The annual cap is €75,000 for a single person and €150,000 for a married or civil-union couple.
2. JEIR – Young Breakthrough Innovation Company
JEIR status is intended for companies that invest more than 30% of their expenses in R&D projects aimed at developing breakthrough innovations.
These companies develop technologies capable of replacing current market standards—innovations with high technological and economic impact.
Investors in a JEIR benefit from an income tax reduction of 50% of the amount invested in the company’s share capital, with an annual cap of €100,000, i.e. up to €50,000 in income tax reduction.
3. Standard JEI status
The original JEI status remains available. It applies to companies that allocate at least 15% of their total expenses to research and development.
It offers the same tax advantages as JEIC status: a 30% income tax reduction on the amount invested, with the same caps.
Are you also an investor? How to invest in a JEI and benefit from the tax reduction
To benefit from the tax advantages of the JEI scheme, it’s simple. You can invest starting from €1,000. The investment must take the form of a subscription to the company’s share capital, with a commitment to hold the shares for at least 5 years.
The tax reduction is then applied when you file your income tax return for the year in which the investment was made.
